Ohsem Cantenna

In this video, we awesomely testing the performance of our awesome Cantenna using the awesome Vector Network Analyzer. Sorry for the not so awesome english-malay dialogue for those who cannot understand this video.

Basically Bart (the guy in maroon shirt) awesomely explained that our Cantenna initially didn't give the 2.4 GHz reading because the thin copper rod connected to the SME was straighten upwards. At first we thought it was the length of it that affects the performance so we tried to cut 7 cm of it but it doesn't show any improvement and vice versa. Then we tried to awesomely bend it and saw changes in the reading. The copper was awesomely bended bit by bit to a certain angle until we finally manage to get the ideal reading.

We assumed that the bending causes it to perform better because the structure and surface of the tin can made the signal bounces in ways that made the copper able to receive more reflected waves in that angle than being straighten upwards.

That's all for our home made wifi antenna performance testing. Thank you for watching!

Materials

So here are the materials that we need to make this Cantenna a reality.
the first fundamental things that we need is obviously a CAN!
we collected various type of can that have different kind of length and radius.

Second item that we need to have is a connector. for this project we require a RP-SMA Connector (Female Jack and 4 holes mount) and  can be solder to hold it in place onto the can.

On the Connector theres an item that would be a variable to our cantenna efficiency, which is a copper wedge that wil be place on the connector inside the can. we would then try and find out wether the length of the copper wedge influence the reception and transmission of signal of a cantenna.

Next item that we need is a copper wire. copper wire will  connect the connector (also as a conducor) to a measuring device.

These are the fundamental items that we need to build our cantenna. Considering the variables of the can (length and radius) and length of the cooper wedge, our target is for the cantenna to be able to receive a 2.4Ghz frequency of Wi-Fi Signal.

Thats it for now. for our next meeting we will start the building progress of our cantenna. stay tuned!

Our 2nd Meeting

2nd Meeting.
Time: 5.00pm
Venue: Tutorial Room, Engneering Faculty.

Yana concentrating on the video being shown

On our 2nd Meeting, we decided to gather all of our information/sources that we found about a directional Wi-Fi antenna. we have come up with lots of video and reading materials regarding DIY Wi-Fi antenna booster.

After reading through the material and watching the videos, and disucussion upon discussion we concluded that we will go with a Wi-Fi Antenna Booster using a can or what we call as CANTENNA!

Why Cantenna?
The reason that we choose cantenna as our project is mainly because of the cost itself. and also some limitation regarding material that are being use to made. What cantenna need is only a can, a cooper wedge, connector, pigtail and wireless card/ USB wireless adapater and voila! you got yourself an atenna!

a brief view how cantenna looks like

On our next post we will show you more about the materials needed for buliding this ohsem cantenna!

Our First Awesome Meeting!

On 28th Awesome-tober 2013, we conducted our very first meeting. It was awesome! We awesomely divided tasks to each of our awesome members accordingly. The main awesome objective of this meeting is to awesomely create this awesome blog to fulfil the awesome requirement of the awesome subject Antenna and Propagation by our awesome lecturer Dr. Alyani.

We will awesomize this awesome blog even more awesome soon so stay connected with our blog!

Meanwhile, listen to this awesome antenna song! :D

Group Members

Hello to all of our awesome readers! This is the blog for the awesome possum group called Ohsem. We were awesomely asked by awesome Dr. Alyani to create this awesome blog describing about the awesome antennas.

Our awesome members are :
  • Hafizah Halip
  • John Jacop
  • Nik NurLiyana
